Welcome to The Ritzy, Brixton A much-loved destination for film-lovers at the heart of a bright and bustling Brixton. Our Story The Electric Pavilion opened on 11 March 1911 and was one of England's earliest purpose-built cinemas, seating over 750 in its grand auditorium. It was seen as a 'scruffy relation' to the nearby Palladium and was known as the 'flea pit'. In 1976 the cinema closed and came close to demolition. However, collaboration between Lambeth Council and the management saw the venue reopen as an arts cinema with the name Little Bit Ritzy, from which the present name is derived. In 1994 four screens, a bar and a café were added. Today the cinema is a popular and much-loved destination for film-lovers at the heart of a bright and bustling Brixton scene. The Ritzy's Edwardian exterior and main auditorium remain intact and stand as an impressive example of early cinema architecture. The downstairs restaurant-bar offers a relaxed and cosy atmosphere, while Upstairs at the Ritzy is a live events venue that's a well-known and well-loved cultural hub for Brixton. [read more]

Small, cosy and intimate, Whirled Cinema is a world away from your everyday multiplex experience. With an affordable membership, and free of advertising and trailers, this is the place to come to indulge your love of good film, kick back with a few drinks and make new friends in a chilled and welcoming environment. A little off the beaten track, we’re hidden away in railway arches in Loughborough Junction (just a stone’s throw from Brixton and Herne Hill), making us one of South London’s best-kept secrets. Since we opened our doors in 2010, as an independent members cinema we have set out to screen a diverse programme of the best of current world and art house cinema. And before and after you get your cultural hit, you can relax and talk film with fellow members (and no doubt the passionate film buffs who work here) in the outdoor balcony area and lounge, take advantage of the bar – serving cocktails to coffee and everything in-between – and take advantage of our delicious hot snacks, should hunger strike. Once you’ve paid your (annual or joint only) membership you don’t have to worry about queuing and buying tickets to see films, or paying for any added extras. You can watch as many films as you like for free, and you can even bring a guest free of charge to share the fun. Rather cleverly, your Oyster card doubles as your membership card – so you’ll always have it to hand – and will allow you to gain access to the cinema. For further membership information visit the Members page. To receive weekly programme updates, you can subscribe to our mailing list. The cinema can also be hired for your special events and screenings at very reasonable rates. [read more]
