WHY US? 50 Years of experience and still counting Poleo Dry Cleaners Brixton Hill is a family run business, serving Brixton and the surrounding areas since 1980, the team here have a combined industry experience of more than 50 years, we have seen it and done it all and are always up for the next big challenge, so why not give us a try, Call us on 020 8674 4873 or drop in and say hello. We take pride in our work Call it an OCD, but we just can’t seem to let things pass our eye, our meticulous working discipline means that clothes are checked 4 times for stains before we have them ready for customers to collect; We will even repeat the cleaning or pressing cycle if need be. Although we are a Dry Cleaners in Brixton, we have customers from all over South London visiting us! We clean and re-clean and we don’t charge extra Once clothes go through our pre and post checks, if we feel another clean will provide better results, we clean again and don’t charge extra! Exactly why Brixton Loves Poleo! Pre-Spotting, Yes we Pre-Spot Stains! Without getting too technical, Pre-spotting is the method of breaking down a stain before it goes through an actual cleaning cycle; stains which are pre-spotted are far more likely to disappear if Pre-Spotted. This is a timely procedure, which requires patience and years of experience to carry out, for this very reason many Dry Cleaners skip this step. Stains are more likely to set in permanently during the cleaning cycle if they have not been pre-spotted. All done in house! We don’t do logistics, we do Dry Cleaning. All services offered are done in house on the same premises, same day, and next day no problems. There’s more. But you probably don’t want to read any more... so if you have any questions just drop us a line 020 8674 4873 or drop in at Poleo Dry Cleaners, Brixton, SW2 1RS. [read more]

Welcome to The Ritzy, Brixton A much-loved destination for film-lovers at the heart of a bright and bustling Brixton. Our Story The Electric Pavilion opened on 11 March 1911 and was one of England's earliest purpose-built cinemas, seating over 750 in its grand auditorium. It was seen as a 'scruffy relation' to the nearby Palladium and was known as the 'flea pit'. In 1976 the cinema closed and came close to demolition. However, collaboration between Lambeth Council and the management saw the venue reopen as an arts cinema with the name Little Bit Ritzy, from which the present name is derived. In 1994 four screens, a bar and a café were added. Today the cinema is a popular and much-loved destination for film-lovers at the heart of a bright and bustling Brixton scene. The Ritzy's Edwardian exterior and main auditorium remain intact and stand as an impressive example of early cinema architecture. The downstairs restaurant-bar offers a relaxed and cosy atmosphere, while Upstairs at the Ritzy is a live events venue that's a well-known and well-loved cultural hub for Brixton. [read more]

Ruach City Church is one of the largest and fastest growing non-denominational Pentecostal Christian churches in Europe. Starting from humble beginnings, with only a handful of faithful members, the church has grown rapidly since its inception in December 1992. The church is known for hosting interdenominational events which have had an overwhelming success in promoting greater unity within the wider Christian church. In 2006, Ruach Ministries which was our name back then, became the 1st Charismatic Church in the UK to host a serving British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, at the ‘Power of One’ Conference, a pioneering initiative to encourage voters to register on the electoral role. Other prominent figures to cross its thresholds have been Baroness Valerie Amos, leader in the House of Lords, Rev Jesse Jackson, Ken Livingston, former Mayor of London and Boris Johnson, former Mayor of London and current Prime Minister. Each year Ruach City Church hosts a special service, ‘Prayer for the Nation’, which is attended by officers of the Metropolitan Police, as part of their ongoing commitment to community liaison and better policing practices. This special service is also attended by political office-holders, members of Parliament and local civic officials. In December 1996, Ruach City Church purchased its first building, a former warehouse situated in Brixton, South London which was converted to accommodate its fast growing congregation. In January 1998 Ruach City Church purchased its 2nd building in Birmingham UK 169 Hunters Road. In December 2007, Ruach City Church purchased its 3rd location, the renowned Gaumont State Theatre in Kilburn, Northwest London. Ruach City Church has been working closely with the local council and planning to restore this historical landmark to its former glory. Not only is it a beautiful place of worship for the congregation and visitors to Ruach City Church but it will also become a unique forum for artistic and musical expression such as plays, organ recitals, etc in the future. The aim is to see this historical landmark become an integral part of the local community once again. In December 2010, Ruach City Church purchased its 4th location based in Walthamstow, East London. In March 2014, saw the realization of a 4th location in Philadelphia, USA. Bishop John Francis – The Founder Bishop Francis is well known in the gospel community, not just locally but also worldwide. Coming from an unquestionable legacy of charismatic leaders, His father, the late Bishop T G Francis was a leading pioneer in the establishment of black-led Pentecostal churches in the UK. Bishop Francis is well-respected within diverse spectrums of society and his influence extends beyond his role within the Church where he is regularly consulted on community and nationwide issues and policy-making. In the past, this has involved attendance at quarterly meetings held with the former Prime Ministers, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown and other cabinet ministers at No.10 Downing Street. In earlier years, Bishop Francis formed the Inspirational Choir who brought gospel music to a mass British public resulting in Bishop John Francis as one of the leading pioneers of gospel music in Britain. Through his influence gospel artistes from the USA, Europe and in fact worldwide were introduced to the UK. Bishop John Francis was also recognised by mainstream organizations such as Mattel Toys, Ford Cars & CBS Records, who signed John and the Inspirational Choir in the 1980’s. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, the 1983 BPI “Silver Disk Award” recognising sales in the UK of more than 250,000 copies of the STIFF single “WINGS OF A DOVE”, 1985 Capital Radio “Gospel Music Excellence Award”, 1986 Capital Radio “Gospel Music Excellence Award”, Capital Radio “Choir of the Year Award”, BBC Radio 2’s “Album of the Year” Award and 1986 BBC RADIO FESTIVAL OF GOSPEL MUSIC “UK Gospel Record of the Year Award” in recognition of the album “SWEET INSPIRATION”, the “Gospel TV Series of the Year” Award (as co-presenter of the UK’s first black gospel TV Series, ‘People Get Ready!’). Bishop John Francis together with the Inspirational Choir, were also honoured to perform in the presence of Her Majesty, the Queen, the Prince of Wales and the late Princess of Wales. In later years, his church choir & musicians recorded the double platinum ‘Live in London’ album with Pastor Donnie McClurkin, USA which was released in 2000. Bishop John Francis founded Flow TV, a Christian Television Station, in March 2014. Flow TV is a Christian Television Channel providing inspirational, motivational and wholesome pure family focused faith based shows with programming and entertainment on the Sky Platform. In November 2015 Bishop Francis sold Flow Tv to a South African company which renamed the channel Faith U.K. In September 2006 the USA Gospel Today Magazine listed Bishop Francis at No.5 of the Top 10 World-Class Pace Setting Pastors as one who is changing a generation and a nation. From 2011 – 2016 Bishop Francis was listed in the Power List of Britain’s’ 100 Most Influential black people. Bishop Francis is married to his wife, Penny who co-pastors the church with him. Church Life A description of church life before the COVID-19 Pandemic Children Children are very welcome at St Matthew’s and form a strong and well-loved part of our congregation. During part of Sunday’s worship, school age children learn about God in Sunday School. Children who are not yet old enough for Sunday School are encouraged to remain in the service. An activity table with books and quiet toys, and floor mat is available to use during the service. Choir Music is important to us, and St Matthew’s sings out! For those wanting to help lead the congregation, choir practice is usually on Fridays, 6.30pm to 7.30pm. All ages welcome, no singing experience is necessary. The choir sing parts of the Communion services, and other songs composed and led by Choirmaster and Organist Francis Reneau, OBE. If you would like to join the choir, have a word with them after church. Tea and Coffee You are warmly invited to stay for tea and coffee after the ten o’clock service. 0Sherree Francis Flowers was formed through a true love of floristry. It’s been a long journey since our early roots, and we’re delighted to have recently launched our new website, where we can give our flower business the online presence it really deserves! The story began in 2004, when founder Sherree bought a garden centre in South London. Suddenly at the helm of a company which only sold about 20% of flower-based stock, the flowers there weren’t of the highest quality – but the trained floristry staff had the skills and know-how to transform them into beautiful arrangements. Over the years, Sherree found that she was being asked to do more and more floristry-based work…and with a workforce of trained florists, it made sense that these skills should be put to good use! Having never originally intended to work in floristry, she found herself more and more intrigued by the world of flowers… In 2008, Sherree Francis Flowers was born. In 2011, Sherree met her future business partner Olga and quickly became friends. With a background in the corporate world of project management, Moscow-born Olga was ready for a change of scene and a change of career - so it wasn’t long before the pair were working together to develop the business. Our new site represents the next chapter of the story – and we can’t wait to share all the latest news and updates with you online. Trivial/brief facts about Sherree Favourite flower(s)? There are so many beautiful flowers! I will narrow it down to hydrangeas, peonies and ranunculus – unfortunately I can only enjoy these stunning flowers for a limited time as they are not available all year round. I also love calla lilies and oriental lilies which I can enjoy throughout the year. Morning person or night owl? Definitely a night owl which isn’t very helpful being a florist and having the crushingly early morning starts. What would be your ideal career if you didn’t have a flower business? A lady of leisure! But failing that a full time Property Developer. I have totally overdosed on “Homes Under The Hammer”! A fact that everyone knows about you I have a degree in Politics (it is a very long story how I ended up on the floristry business!) and a complete political geek. I always stay up and watch the UK and US Election results to the bitter end so end up not going to bed and heading straight to the flower market. Favourite food and drink Again so much lovely food to choose from! I could eat roast potatoes every day. Also warm chocolate cake with (melted) ice cream. I am not a big drinker (not crazy about the taste of alcohol) but one of our clients makes a top tiramisu cocktail – just divine. Favourite cuisine Caribbean (obviously), Italian, Modern British/European, Greek, Turkish, Middle Eastern – I could go on! Any quirky / eccentric habits? I cannot eat ice cream straight from the freezer – I have to put it in the microwave to melt it a bit! I use the word "obviously" way too much even when it isn’t necessary. I scratch my eyebrows whilst I am reading a book. Trivial/brief facts about Olga Favourite flower(s)? Top of the list has to be lily of the valley and lilac. The exquisite scent of these beautiful flowers takes me back to my childhood in Russia. Morning person or night owl? Unfortunately, I am a night owl but being a tough Russian (with tons of discipline!) I do manage to jump out of bed all bright and breezy at 5am! What would be your ideal career if you didn’t have a flower business? I love organising parties and also travelling so it would be lovely to combine the two, so my dream job would be an Event Organiser and Planner of luxury or interesting holidays Fact(s) that everyone knows about you I love baking and can make a mean cheesecake and carrot cake. I can hear “British Bake Off” calling me to apply! Favourite food and drink Oysters and Dom Perignon champagne – please don’t judge me! Favourite Cuisine French and Japanese every time Any quirky / eccentric habits? When I am concentrating I have a habit of talking to myself and asking myself questions. I always get a very good and sensible answer back! [read more]
